Inside DIAS Accreditation
Implemented since 2010 through the Health Insurance Amendment Act of 2007, DIAS aims to standardise the operational processes and services of practices offering diagnostic imaging services (both radiology and non-radiology diagnostic imaging services) in order to ensure that anyone receives the same quality service regardless of wherever they are in Australia. This accreditation also allows these practices to maintain eligibility to Medicare benefits, which is a significant benefit in a competitive field of business.
The process consists of 15 standard that have to be met for full accreditation, but new practices can opt for an entry level accreditation where they are measured against 3 standards and given 2 years to achieve the full suite. This accreditation requires ongoing maintenance as well as renewal every four years, which makes it a significant administrative burden for medical practices and clinicians. Practices choosing not to participate or not meeting the requirements to achieve certification are not eligible for Medicare funding.
In 2016, various amendments to the DIAS and standards were made following a review in order to clarify requirements and address inconsistencies. All practices will be assessed according to the revised standards regardless of when they entered the scheme.
